Does Teeth Whitening Actually Work?
One thing that many people want is clean, healthy looking teeth. Over the years, it is easy for teeth to start to fade… or worse. Obviously, it is important to have healthy teeth, not just healthy looking teeth, but a smile full of sparkling whites certainly can add a boost of confidence.
There are many types of products that can be used to whiten teeth. Some of the products work better than others. There are also professional whitening procedures that can be done in a dentist’s office. Some of the products available include toothpastes, rinses, whitening strips, gels, and trays.
Whitening toothpaste have chemicals that help to remove surface stains. They are used just like any other type of toothpaste. They do not contain bleach and will not remove the discoloration deep inside the tooth. They can help to lighten your teeth slightly, so it is a good option for those who only have slight discoloration.
Rinses help to reduce plaque and freshen breath like other mouthwashes, but they also contain ingredients that can help to whiten teeth. The process is slow and may take up to twelve weeks before you will see any results. Rinses are not as effective as other whitening products because the rinse is only on the teeth for a short time.
Whitening strips and gels are a better option for whitening teeth because they stay on your teeth for a longer period of time. The strips are thin and coated with a whitening gel that contains peroxide. They are invisible, allowing you to wear them while you are out. They are applied to the teeth once or twice a day for ten to thirty minutes at a time, depending on the brand that is used. Gels are applied directly to the surface of the teeth with a brush twice a day. The results can be seen in a few days and will last for months.
Tray tooth whitening products is another way to whiten teeth. A small mouth guard is filled with a whitening gel and is placed in the mouth for a few hours a day or overnight. Results may not be seen for a few weeks depending on how discolored the teeth are. Mouth guards filled with gel may be uncomfortable to wear.
Having your teeth whitened in a dentists office produces results instantly. “One thirty or sixty minute session will produce results that will last for months,” says Dr. Goldsmith, an Indianapolis dentist. “It is the fastest, surest way to go,” he continues. The whitening product that is used is applied directly to the teeth and is activated with heat, a laser, or a special light.
There are a few types of options for teeth whitening, and some may be a better option depending on how discolored your teeth are. While a dentist is the most expensive, it is the best option for teeth that are really discolored. Over the counter products are a great option for slight discoloration.
